After attending various colleges, he worked as a proofreader for the newspapers "The Richmond Times-Dispatch", "The Seattle Times" (where he also wrote as an art critic), and "Seattle Post-Intelligencer". His novels are characterized by the style of post-beat, inventive, humor-filled literature that is particularly beloved by young audiences: "Another Roadside Attraction", 1971 (Greek title "Amanda the Earth Girl"), "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues", 1976 (Greek title "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues", perhaps his most famous book), "Still Life with Woodpecker", 1980 (Greek title "Woodpecker"), "Jitterbug Perfume", 1984 (Greek title "The Scent of Dreams"), "Skinny Legs and All", 1990 (Greek title "The Dance of the Seven Veils"), "Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas", 1994 (Greek title "Half Asleep in Our Frog Pajamas"), "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates", 2000 (Greek title "Fierce Invalids Return from Hot Climates"), "Villa Incognito", 2003.
